When I came to Chicago, I carried my own American Dream. I wanted to study and learn new
skills and find a good job in Chicago. To me, the American Dream means having the
opportunity to choose my own path in life. However, I have faced many challenges in Chicago.
Everything was new and unfamiliar, and I often felt nervous about starting over in a different
country. Sometimes, I wondered if I would be able to achieve my goals or fit into this new
society. Despite these worries, I was determined to work hard and make the most of every
opportunity that came my way.
To begin with, when I
arrived in Chicago, I felt anxious. I felt like I had lost everything such as my
family, friends, and even familiar food. Moreover, I was in Chicago alone and
faced many challenges every day. I called my family on FaceTime every day
because I missed them so much. After two months, I started to communicate more
with people around me. At first, it was difficult to talk to strangers, but I tried
to join conversations and engage in small talk. These experiences made me
stronger. As a result, I have changed and grown as a person. Now, I am more
independent and confident than before.
Furthermore, learning new
skills has been one of the most important parts of my life here. When I arrived
in Chicago, I needed to improve my English because I wanted to study at
college. Even though I missed my family and friends in Iran, I was determined
to build a new life here. Of course, the American Dream is not always easy, but
I was willing to study hard. Attending educational classes, especially English
language courses, helped me meet great professors and many people from
different cultures. These classes created a positive atmosphere and motivated
me to keep going. I remember that on the first day of my English class, I was
nervous. However, after one hour, I made friends and had a great time with
them. Although I had some difficulties at first, now I feel like I belong here
and feel comfortable in Chicago. I also joined a student group, which helped me
practice English and learn about American culture.
In conclusion, missing
home and learning new skills can be challenging. Studying and finding a good
job in Chicago can be hard, but these challenges create new opportunities.
Meeting new people at college or in educational classes has made me stronger.
Even though I left everything in Iran, I now feel content and at home here.
Having new friends and new experiences makes me satisfied. In the end, being
far away from my country has changed me into a new person. I am proud of my
progress and excited for my future in America.
